Haiku: Traditions and Rituals

For the [livejournal.com profile] writerverse Days of the Week challenge. Seven haiku, one per day.

The days of the week have a variety of secular, cultural traditions associated with them; many have names of pagan origins; and there are a multitude of magical associations with each – from astrological signs to gemstones and the predominant energies of that day.

I've attempted here to give a flavour of all three of these things, to sketch out the form of what types of associations people might have for each week day. I've started with Monday because that for me is the start of the week, though Sunday is often chosen as the first day of the week in many calendar systems.

I used this syllable counter to check each line for compliance.

Traditions and Rituals

The day of the moon
new start, a new week begins
goddess, silver, dreams

Red Mars, Tyr's day for
passion, protection, courage
power, politics

Wednesday, midweek blues
yet lucky by tradition
Odin's day, learn, talk

Thor, prosperity
people look to the weekend
optimism growing

Love, transformation
thank goodness it is Friday
sacred to Freya

Named for Saturn this
is for retrieving what's lost
or watching cartoons

The sun's day, prayer
success, friendship, fatherhood
the week ends here

These are really fascinating :D I love the way you've blended religious/historical elements with stuff from modern life. Especially Saturday, with watching cartoons ;D
