Nikki Heat glared at the screen. "What is this?"

"It's called fanfiction."

Nikkis' eyes narrowed. Fanfiction about her, as she were a fictional creation, the product of some writer's fevered imagination...

"Hmm," Castle said, turning another page. "I suppose I'm flattered, actually."

"By what?" Esposito asked, putting a coffee down on the desk by Castle's elbow.

"Fanfiction," Ryan said. "It's when people write about their favourite characters from tv and movies and books, but they make up new stories for them."

"Like
Tangled is fanfic of Rapunzel?" Esposito suggested, his brow creased in thought.

"A little bit. Only not quite," Ryan said patiently. "Anyway, I found this really great piece based on 'Heat Wave' and printed it off for Castle to see. In it, Castle's fictional Nikki Heat finds out that there's a story online called 'Fan-ning the Flames' and it's a fanfic type story all about her – and then she realises that she's just a fictional character. It's really
meta. "

"What are you doing?" Amie asked.

"Finishing this fanfic for the Meta Challenge," Lara said, her fingers flying across the keyboard.

"What's it about?"

"It's a Castle fic, where Castle's fictional character, Nikki Heat, has fiction written about her, and in the fanfic Nikki discovers she's a fictional character."

Amie sighed. "I never should have encouraged you to watch Inception."

For those of you not in the know, Castle is a show about a crime writer who shadows a police detective and bases his fictional character, Nikki Heat, on her. To further muddy the waters of reality vs fiction you can buy the ghost-written novels about Nikki Heat that purport to be written by Richard Castle, the character played by Nathan Fillion in the tv show.
