Summary: this 30 days of fiction meme, prompt #14 Write the final scene of a romance novel “Never Been Caught”
Warnings: None
Notes: Not my usual genre, and not something I intend to write more of, but an interesting experiment. The kind of ending to a romance novel I could appreciate :D Corrine and Jack were two of the names Behind The Name's random generator gave me when I was desperate for names – it's hard to write a romance novel without mentioning names.
"Don't go."
Corrine turned, surprised. She put the suitcase down on the platform. "Jack. What are you doing here? How did you find me?"
"I have my ways." He had his hands stuffed deep in his pockets. "And I listened to you."
Corrine glanced up at the board. Her train was due. "Jack, I have to go."
"Why?"
She shrugged, tugged nervously at her scarf. "Because I'm not that person. The person you want to be with forever. You deserve to be happy. I won't make you happy."
"You're made me happier than I can ever remember." Jack stepped forward. "Stop running, Corrine. Please."
The train pulled into the station. Corrine glanced over her shoulder, watching people disembark as other passengers jostled each other in an attempt to board. Jack took hold of one of her hands in his leather gloved ones.
"I listened," he insisted. "And I paid attention. You don't want to be a wife. You don't want to take my name. You don't want to bear my children. And that's all right. I don't want to tame you. Just let me love you."
Corrine blinked at the tears welling up in her eyes. "And what will we do?"
"Buy the vineyard," Jack said. "I'm going to sell the hotel. I never wanted to be a hotelier and I'm not going to waste any more of my life doing what my father wanted me to. I want us to have the vineyard, and make love under that oak tree, and be happy."
"Jack, you can't..."
"I'm selling it," he said firmly. "Whether you stay or not. You've shown me that sometimes you have to follow your heart. Mine is with you, even if yours is not with me. It's not in the hotel. Never has been. Never will be."
Corrine looked once more at the train. Jack let go of her hand.
"I know you like adventure," he said. "I promise there's plenty of adventure to be had in fixing up the house and getting the vineyard back in shape. Did you see the hole in the roof? We could make love under the stars while still in the bedroom!"
Corrine gave a half-hearted laugh choked with unshed tears.
"I'll always love you," he said. "Goodbye, Corinne."
He took a step back. He wouldn't force her to stay. This had to be her decision. She picked up the suitcase, turned towards the train. Jack stared at the platform, unable to watch her go.
He was almost thrown off balance when Corrine flung herself at him, wrapping her arms around him, her suitcase dropped to the floor. Jack grinned, undeterred by the curious glances and encouraging smiles of the passers-by.
"Jack," she sobbed. "I love you too."
Jack held her tightly, just for a moment. That was the key. She'd never been caught, never would be; could be trapped - tamed, destroyed. But she could also be befriended, loved, supported. As long as he was willing to both hold her close and to let her go, she'd be happy. And so would he.
